Exploring the Principles of Person-Centered Therapy

As a therapist who embraces an eclectic methodology, the foundational principles I adhere to are of great importance. Among the theoretical models that inform my work is Rogerian, or Person-Centered Therapy (PCT). This approach aligns with my belief in the profound capacity of individuals to steer their own course toward psychological well-being and self-actualization.




Understanding Person-Centered Therapy

Imagine a therapeutic environment where you are actively engaged in shaping your healing process. Person-Centered Therapy, established in the 1940s by Carl Rogers, advocates for the power of active listening, empathy, and acceptance, diverging from more traditional, analytic therapy modalities.

Connection to the Human Potential Movement

In the 1960s, Person-Centered Therapy aligned with the Human Potential Movement, reflecting a shared belief in the intrinsic motivation of individuals to fulfill their potential. Rogers identified that sometimes, our self-view can be a barrier to reaching this state of self-actualization.


The Mechanism of Person-Centered Therapy

The essence of Person-Centered Therapy lies in addressing the potential mismatch between self-perception and lived experience, which can manifest as anxiety or discomfort. As a therapist, my role is to provide a supportive and non-judgmental space that allows for the exploration of your internal world, aiding in the uncovering of personal truths.
